Respiratory quotient is the ratio of the volume of $CO _{2}$ produced to the volume of $O _{2}$ consumed in respiration.It is more than unity in organic acid (e.g. oxalic acid). RQ is one in case of carbohydrate because the respiration is aerobic. It is less than unity in fat (0.7) or protein (0.9).
