RQ is the ratio of the volume of $ CO_{2}$ released to the volume of oxygen taken in respiration. It depends on the nature of the substrate, which is oxidised. For carbohydrates $RQ$ is one, for fats and proteins less than one, more than one for organic acids, etc.
