Q. The reddish brown precipitate formed in the Fehling’s test for aldehydes $(RCHO)$ is due to the formation of

KVPYKVPY 2017Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Fehling’s reagent is a mixture of aqueous copper sulphate and alkaline sodium potassium tartarate. When an aldehyde is heated with Fehling’s reagent a reddish brown precipitate is obtained and the aldehydes are oxidised to corresponding carboxylate anion. This reddish brown precipitate is due to the formation of copper oxide.
