Q. The reaction $2NO(g) + O_2 (g) \rightleftharpoons 2NO_2 (g)$ is of first order. If volume of reaction vessel is reduced to $\frac{1}{3},$ the rate of reaction would be

Chemical Kinetics

Solution:

$2NO (g) + O_2 (g) \, \longrightarrow \, \, 2NO_2 (g)$
When the volume of vessel change into $\frac{1}{3}$ then concentration of reactant become three times. The rate of reaction for first order reaction is directly proportional to concentration. Therefore, rate of reaction will increase three times.
