Q. The rate of esterification of acetic acid with methyl alcohol $\left(\right.I\left.\right),$ ethyl alcohol $\left(\right.II\left.\right),$ isopropyl alcohol $\left(\right.III\left.\right)$ and tertiary butyl alcohol $\left(\right.IV\left.\right)$ follows in the order -

Solution:

The order rate of esterification of acetic acid is

methyl alcohol $\left(\right.I\left.\right)$ $>$ ethyl alcohol $\left(\right.II\left.\right)$ $>$ isopropyl alcohol $\left(I I I\right)>$ tertiary butyl alcohol $\left(\right.IV\left.\right)$

Increase in size of alkyl group in $ROH$ decreases the rate of etherification
