Solution:

The faeces normally contain water, inorganic salts, mucous, undigestible food residues, pigments, dead bacteria and cells and some fat including cholesterol. Its brown colour is due to sterobilin and urobilin, which are derivatives of bilirubin. The odour is caused principally by products of bacterial action. The actual odouriferous products include indole, skatole, mercaptans and hydrogen sulphide.
