The construction of the first recombinant DNA by linking a gene encoding antibiotic resistance with a native plasmid of Salmonella typhimurium was accomplished in 1972 by Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer. This rDNA was transferred in Escherichia coli which could replicate and produce multiple copies.
