Solution:

To maintain the electrostatic neutrality of plasma, many chloride ions diffuse from plasma into RBCs and bicarbonate ions pass out. The chloride content of RBCs increases when oxygenated blood becomes deoxygenated. This is termed as Chloride shift or Hamburger shift.
