Q. The plot that best represents the relationship between the extent of adsorption (x/m) and pressure (p) is

KVPYKVPY 2017Surface Chemistry

Solution:

The relation between the extent of adsorption $(x / m)$ and pressure $(p)$ is given by Freundlich adsorption is other $m$.
According to this,
$\frac{x}{m} \propto p^{1 / n}(n>1)$
where, $x$ is the mass of gas adsorbed on mass $m$ of the adsorbent at pressure $p, k$ and $n$ are constant.
$\therefore \frac{x}{m}=h p^{1 / n}$
Taking log both sides
$\log \frac{x}{m}=\frac{1}{n} \log p+\log k$
Comparing the above equation with the equation of straight line, $y=m x +c$.
$\therefore $ The graph would be linear, where slope $=\frac{1}{n}, c=\log k$
