Q.
The pesticide most persistent in the soil is
AMUAMU 2004
Solution:
Dteldrin is an example of organochlorines and is most persistant in soil. Most importantly dieldrin is five times more toxic than DDT. BHC is organochlorines (chlorinated hydrocarbon), which is used as pesticides in India. It constitutes 50% of total volume of all pesticides. Rate of degradation of organochlorines is low and they are not soluble in water.
DDT (Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethan): is major pesticides all over the world. It accumulates in environment and is responsible for biological magnification or food chain concentration, ie, continuous increase in concentration of a toxicants at successive trophic levels in food chain. It is a potent toxicant of water and soil, where it reaches as spray discharge applied for mosquito control.
