Q. The pair of gases responsible for acid rain are

EAMCETEAMCET 2012

Solution:

Oxides of nitrogen and sulphur are responsible for acid rain.

$NO _{2}+ H _{2} O \longrightarrow HNO _{3}$

$SO _{2} \stackrel{[ O ]}{\longrightarrow } SO _{3}+ H _{2} O \longrightarrow H _{2} SO _{4}$

Due to the presence of $HNO _{3}$ and $H _{2} SO _{4}$ (strong acids) rain water becomes acidic and rain is called the acid rain.
