Q. The oxide of a metal contains $ 40\% $ of oxygen. The valency of metal is $ 2 $ . What is the atomic weight of metal?

EAMCETEAMCET 2014

Solution:

$\because 40\, g$ of oxygen is combined with $=60\, g$ of metal

$\therefore 8\, g$ of oxygen will be combined with $=\frac{60 \times 8}{40}$

$=12\, g$ of metal

$\therefore $ Equivalent weight of metal $=12$

Now, Atomic weight $=$ Equivalent weight $\times$ valency

$=12 \times 2=24$
