The sum of oxidation numbers of all the elements in a compound is zero.
Let the oxidation number of $C r$ be $x$
$\therefore $ for $K _{2} Cr _{2} O _{7}+1 \times 2+2 x+7(-2) =0 $
$2+2 x-14 =0 $
$2 x =12$
$x =6$
