Solution:

The $- OH$ group of alcohol or the $- COOH$ group of a carboxylic acid is replaced by $- Cl$ using phosphorus penta chloride (ie, $PCl _{5}$ )
$\underset{\text { Alcohol }}{ ROH }+ PCl _{5} \longrightarrow RCl + POCl _{3}+ HCl$
$\underset{\text{Acid}}{RCOOH}+ PCl _{5} \longrightarrow RCOCl + POCl _{3}+ HCl
