Q. The number of types of bonds between two carbon atoms in calcium carbide is:

AIEEEAIEEE 2011Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Calcium carbide exists as $Ca^{2+}$ and $C_{2}^{2-}$ According to the molecular orbital model, $C_{2}^{2-}$ should have a bond order of 3 (configuration $\pi_{u}^{2} \pi^{2}_{u} \sigma^{2}_{g}$). MOT configuration suggests that it contains one $\sigma$ and two $\pi$-bonds
