On attacking at $N - N -$ dimethyl aniline by $\overset{+}{N}O _{2}$, electrophilic nitration takes place and the process is called
Nitrosation.
Here $\overset{+}{N}O _{2}$ act as an attacking electrophilic agent. It is produced as follows:
$HNO _{3}+2 H _{2} SO _{4} \longrightarrow \overset{+}{N}O _{2}+2 HSO _{4}^{-}+ H _{2} O$
