Q. The most favourable condition for the manufacture of $ NH_{3}$ is:

Punjab PMETPunjab PMET 2005The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

$N _{2}$ and $H _{2}$ combine to give ammonia as follows:
$\underset{1 vol}{N _{2}(g)}+\underset{3 vol}{3 H _{2}(g)} \rightleftharpoons \underset{2 vol}{2 NH _{3}(g)}$
$\Delta H=-92.38\, kJ\, mol ^{-1}$
This reaction is exothermic and is accompanied by decrease in volume.
So favourable conditions for forward reaction, according to Le-Chatelier's principle are :
(i) low temperature (ii) high pressure
(iii) excess of $N _{2}$ and $H _{2}$
