Q. The molecule with the highest dipole moment among the following is

KVPYKVPY 2016Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

The dipole moment of a molecule depends upon the electronegativity difference of the different atoms and on the geometry of a molecule.
Symmetrical molecules have zero dipole moment. As in all the given cases molecules are unsymmetrical, so they will have non-zero dipole moment. Therefore, here dipole moment depends upon the electronegativity difference of atoms.
Among the given molecules $HF$ has the highest dipole moment, because there is large difference in electronegativity between $H$ and $F$ atom
