Chiasmata is the point of contact or the X shaped structure formed between two non-sister chromatids of the homologous chromosome during the process of crossing over of genetic material. A bivalent is a pair of the homologous chromosome that has exchanged DNA in at least one site called the chiasmata. The minimum chiasmata found in a bivalent is one and can go up to three in rare cases.
