Q. The minerals involved in the photolysis of water are
(A) Manganese
(B) Calcium
(C) Magnesium
(D) Chloride

Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Solution:

Photolysis of water means breaking up of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen molecules in the illuminated chloroplasts. Photolysis of water requires manganese, calcium and chloride ions. The electrons released in photolysis of water are used for reducing PS II. The oxygen evolving complex required for photolysis has four Mn ions. Liberation of $O _{2}$ also requires $Ca ^{+}$ and $Cl ^{-}$ ions.
