Q.
The maximum number of electrons in a subshell is given by the expression
AIPMTAIPMT 1989Structure of Atom
Solution:
The number of orbitals in a subshell $= (2l + 1) $
where, $l =$ azimuthal quantum number
Since, each orbital contains maximum two electrons, the number of electrons in any subshell
$= 2 \times$ number of orbitals
$= 2 (2l + 1)$
$= 4l + 2$
