Q. The mass of 1 mole of air is $29 \times 10^{-3} kg$. The speed of sound in air at standard temperature and pressure is $\left(\right.$ Take $\left.\gamma=\frac{7}{5}\right)$

Waves

Solution:

Speed $=\sqrt{\frac{\gamma P}{\rho}}$
$\rho=\frac{\text { Mass of } 1 \text { mole of air }}{\text { Volume of } 1 \text { mole at STP }}$
$=\frac{29 \times 10^{-3} kg }{22.4 \times 10^{-3} m ^{3}}$
$\rho=1.3 P_{\text {Standard }}=1.01 \times 10^{5} Nm ^{-2}$
$\Rightarrow $ Speed $=\sqrt{\frac{7 \times 1.01 \times 10^{5}}{5 \times 1.3}} $
$ \simeq 330 ms ^{-1} . $
