Q. The mass and radius of the sun are $1.99 \times 10^{30} \,kg$ and $R=6.96 \times 10^{\circ} \,m$. The escape velocity of a rocket from the sun is

Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2010

Solution:

The escape velocity is given by
$v_{e}=\sqrt{\frac{2 \,G M}{r}} $
So, $v_{e}=\sqrt{\frac{2 \times 6.67 \times 10^{-11} \times 1.99 \times 10^{30}}{6.96 \times 10^{8}}} $
$=617589.3 \,m / s $
or, $v_{e}=617.6 \,km / s$
