Lysosomes are lytic in nature and are involved in digestion of intracellular or extracellular particles, depending upon the different kinds of particles.
[a] Extracellular particles : Lysosomes act as the digestive system of the cells enabling it to digest the proteins and other substances taken in by endocytosis.
[b] Intracellular particles : When there is deficiency of food materials, lysosomes digest the carbohydrates, proteins and lipids present in cytoplasm.
