Bacteria can be classified into two groups on the basis of the differences in the cell envelopes and the manner in which they respond to the staining procedure developed by Christian Gram. Gram staining is a differential staining method that separates bacteria into two categories based on the cell wall composition. Those that take up the Gram stain are called Gram-positive and the other that does not takes up Gram stain are called Gram-negative bacteria.
