Q. The ionisation constant of phenol is higher than that of ethanol because

COMEDKCOMEDK 2012Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

The ionization constant of phenol is more than that of ethanol because phenoxide ion is stabilized by resonance.
Note: Ionization constant (Ka) of phenol is more than that of ethanol indicates phenol is more acidic than alcohol. Phenol on ionization gives phenoxide ion it is stabilized by resonance.
