Q. The hydrogen ion concentration in a mixture of $10\, mL$ of $0.1\, M H_2SO_ 4$ and $10\, mL$ of $0.1\, M \,KOH$ solution in water, is

KVPYKVPY 2009Equilibrium

Solution:

Number of moles of $H_2SO_4 = 0.1\times10= 1$
Number of moles of $KOH = 0.1\times10 = 1$
As number of moles of $KOH$ and $H_2SO_4$ are same,
i.e. $KOH$ is completely neutralising $H_2SO_4$.
$\therefore $ The resulting molarity of a mixture will give the hydrogen ion concentration.
$MV = M_1\,V_1 + M_2\,V_2$
$M\left(20\right)=1+1$
$M=\frac{2}{20}=0.1$
