Q. The H$_{\alpha}$ line of hydrogen
AIIMS
AIIMS 1996
Atoms
A
has a wavelength smaller than that of the $H_{\beta}$ line
27%
B
has a wavelength $4860\, \mathring{A}$
19%
C
is emitted in the transition from the second excited state to the first excited state
45%
D
has a wavelength $6060 \mathring{A}$.
9%
Solution:
$H _{\alpha}$ line is emitted, when the electron jumps from the $n=3$
orbit (second excited state) to the $n=2$ orbit (first excited state).
And $H_{\beta}$ line is also emitted,
when the electron jumps from the $n=4$
orbit to the $n=2$ orbit.
