Q. The geometrical shapes of $XeF _{5}^{+}, XeF _{6},$ and $XeF _{8}{ }^{2-}$ respectively are

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Number of electron pair in $XeF _{5}^{+}=\frac{1}{2}(8+5-1+0)=6$

$ \Rightarrow s p^{3} d^{2}:$ Square-based pyramidal

Number of electron pair in $XeF _{6}=\frac{1}{2}(8+6-0+0)=7$

$\Rightarrow s p^{3} d^{3} ;$ distorted octahedral In $XeF _{8}^{2-}$,

Number of electron pair in $=\frac{1}{2}(8+8+2)=9$
