Q. The gas that has the slowest rate of diffusion among $O_2, H_2, CO_2$ and $CH_4$ is

KVPYKVPY 2009Chemical Kinetics

Solution:

The rate of diffusion of gases under similar conditions of temperature and pressure is inversely proportional to the square roots of their molecular masses, i.e.
Rate of diffusion$\alpha\frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}$
The correct increasing order of molecular masses of given gases is,
$H_2 < CH_4 < O_2 < CO_2$
$\therefore $ Increasing order of rate of diffusion will be
$CO_2 < O_2 < CH_4 < H_2$
Thus, $CO_2$ has the slowest rate of diffusion.
