Q. The following reaction is known as
$C_{2}H_{5}OH + SOCl_{2} \xrightarrow{\text{Pyridine}} C_{2}H_{5}Cl + SO_{2}+ HCl$

Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Solution:

Darzen's method: Alkyl halides are prepared when thionyl chloride and alcohols are refulxed in presence of pyridine.
$R - OH + SOCl _{2}\xrightarrow[{reflux}]{py} R - Cl + SO _{2}+ HCl$
By products of this reaction are gases $\left( SO _{2}, HCl \right)$ so can be easily removed from the reaction mixture.
