Q. The first codon discovered by Nirenberg and Mathaei was:

Jharkhand CECEJharkhand CECE 2004

Solution:

Nirenberg and Mathaei proved the existence of triplet code by synthesizing artificial m-RNA which contained only uracil. This poly U sequence when placed in cell free system containing enzymes and protein for protein synthesis, a small polypeptide molecule was produced which was formed by linking of phenylalanine. Such a polynucleotide chain of m-RNA for poly-A and poly-C give polylysine and polyproline peptide chain respectively. Poly-G do not translated because it form a complex triple helix.
