Q. The figure given below shows the variation of vapour pressure of different liquids with temperature.

At high altitude, atmospheric pressure is low (say $60 \,mm \,Hg$ ). At what temperature does liquid $CCl _{4}$ boils?

States of Matter

Solution:

When atmospheric pressure decreases to $60\, mm$ of $Hg$, liquid boils below the boiling temperature.
According to the graph, $CCl _{4}$ boils at $349\, K$, when atmospheric pressure approaches $760 \, mm$ of $Hg$.
At $60\, mm$ of $Hg , CCl _{4}$ boils at temperature $\approx 281\, K$.
