Q. The equivalent weight of an element is $4 .$ Its chloride has a vapour density $59.25 $ Then the valency of the element is

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Molecular weight of chloride $=59.25 \times 2=118.5$

Let the valency of metal is $x$ then chloride is $M Cl _{x}$

$\therefore $ Molecular weight of chloride = Equivalent weight of metal $\times x+x \times 35.5$

$118.5=4 x+35.5 x $

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{118.5}{39.5}=3$
