Q.
The equivalent weight of a solid element is found to be $9$. If the specific heat of this element is $1.05\, Jg ^{-1} K ^{-1}$, then its atomic weight is
AMUAMU 2005
Solution:
Atomic weight
$=$ Equivalent weight $\times$ valency .
Here equivalent weight $=9$
Specific heat of element $=1.05 \,J \,g ^{-1} K ^{-1}$
By using
Valency of element $=\frac{\text { approximate weight }}{\text { equivalent weight }}$
$=\frac{26.8}{\text { specific heat }}$
$=\frac{26.8 / 1.05}{9} $
$=2.835 \approx 3 $
$\because $ Atomic weight $=$ equivalent weight $\times$ valency
$ = 9 \times 3 = 27$
