RBCs contain a very high concentration of the enzyme, carbonic anhydrase, and minute quantities of the same is present in the plasma too. This enzyme facilitates the reversible conversion of CO2 and H2O to HCO3. The enzyme catalyzes a reaction by increasing the rate of the reaction in a normal cellular condition. Carbonic anhydrase is one of the fastest enzyme which increases the speed of the reaction by forming 600000 molecules of product per second.
