Q. The empirical formula and molecular mass of a compound are $CH_{2}O$ and $180\, g$ respectively. What will be the molecular formula of the compound?

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Empirical formula mass $= CH _2 O$
$ =12+2 \times 1+16=30 $
Molecular mass $=180$
$n=\frac{\text { Molecular mass }}{\text { Empirical formula mass }} $
$=\frac{180}{30}=6$
$\therefore$ Molecular formula $= n \times$ empirical formula
$ =6 \times CH _2 O $
$ = C _6 H _{12} O _6 $
