Q. The electron in the lowest $(n = 1)$ orbit in hydrogen atom has energy - $13.6 \,eV$. How much energy is required to ionize a hydrogen atom which is already in the first excited level?

Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2004

Solution:

Ionisation energy $E=\frac{-13.6}{n^{2}} eV$
For first excited state $n=2$
So, $E=\frac{-13.6}{2^{2}}=3.4\, eV$
$ =3.4 \,eV$ (numerically)
