The gradual and predictable change in the species composition of a given area is called ecological succession. The change is sequential and environmentally regulated. There are two main types of succession:
  • In primary succession, there is a beginning of life forms in a barren area. This is a very slow process.
  • In secondary succession, there is a natural or man made destruction of the initial vegetation and re-development of new flora. This is a faster process.
