Q. The driver of a train moving at $72 \,km \,h^{- 1}$ sights another train moving at $4 \,m \, s^{- 1}$ on the same track and in the same direction. He instantly applies brakes to produce a retardation of $1 m \, s^{- 2}$ . The minimum distance between the trains so that no collision occurs is

Solution:

Relative initial velocity $=72\times \frac{5}{18}-4=16 \, m \, s^{- 1}$
Now, $0^{2}-16\times 16=2\left(- 1\right)S$
Or $S=128 \, m$
