James Watson and Francis Crick proposed that DNA consists of two strands, which are helically coiled. Each strand consists of a backbone, made up of alternating deoxyribose sugar and phosphate with phosphate joining the two sugars through a phosphodiester bond. The bases are stacked inside and pair with the base of the opposite strand through hydrogen bonds. The two strands are said to be complementary
