Q. The dielectric strength of a medium is $2\,kVmm^{-1}$ . What is the maximum potential difference that can be set up across a $50\,pm$ specimen without puncturing it.

Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Solution:

Dielectric strength = Potential difference gradient.
Hence maximum potential difference = Dielectric strength $\times$ distance
= $\frac{2000\, V}{mm} \times 50 \, \mu m = \frac{2000 \, V}{10^{-3} \, m} \times 50 \times 10^{-6} m$ = 100 V.
