Q. The correct order of reactivity of halogen is

UP CPMTUP CPMT 2015The p-Block Elements - Part2

Solution:

The order of reactivity is $F >\, Cl > \,Br >\,I$ It is due to the following factors :
(i) As atomic size increases the attraction for an additional electron by the nucleus becomes less. Thus, reactivity decreases.
(ii) Due to decrease in electronegativity from $F$ to $I$, the bond between halogen and other elements becomes weaker and weaker. Thus, fluorides are most stable while iodides are least.
