Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques

Solution:

$K_{a}$ value of carboxylic group is more than $K_{a}$ of $\overset{+}{N}H_{3}$ in amino acid and (Z) will have comparatively more $K_{a}$ than $—\overset{+}{N}H_{3}(Y)$ due to -$I$ effect of carboxylic group. We know that acidic strength is directly proportional to $K_{a}$
Hence, correct order of acidic strength is :
$\underset{(X)}{-\overset{+}{C}{O_{2}}H} >\,\underset{(Z)}{-\overset{+}{N}{H_{3}}}>\,\underset{(Y)}{\overset{+}{N}{H_{3}}}$
