Solution:

Benzaldehyde does not contain $ \alpha - $ hydrogen atom. Therefore it gives Cannizzaros reaction i.e. on reaction with alkali, it undergoes auto-oxidation, auto reduction and gives benzyl alcohol and potassium benzoate.
