Q. The concentration of a number of ions and other materials is higher in vacuoles than those in cytoplasm - why?

Cell : The Unit of Life

Solution:

In plants, the tonoplast facilitates the active transport of a number of ions and other materials against concentration gradients into the vacuole. Hence, the ions and other materials are present in a concentration which is significantly higher in the vacuole than in the cytoplasm.
