Q. The compound which on reaction with aqueous nitrous acid at low temperature produces an oily nitrosoamine is

MP PMTMP PMT 1998Amines

Solution:

Secondary $(2^{\circ})$ amines (aliphatic as well as aromatic) react with nitrous acid $(HNO_2)$ to form N-nitrosoamines.

$\underset{(2 ^{\circ} \text{amine)}}{(C_2 H_5)_2} NH + \underset{\text{(nitrous acid) }}{HONO} \rightarrow \underset{\text{(N-nitrosodiethylamine)}}{(C_2 H_5)_2 N-N = O +} H_2O$
