Q. The compound that will not give iodoform on treatment with alkali and iodine is

IIT JEEIIT JEE 1985Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Iodoform test is given by those compounds which has $COCH _{3}$ group and also those alcohols which produces the $CH _{3} CO$ group on oxidation so here in this case acetone has $COCH _{3}$ group and ethanol on oxidation produces $CH _{3} CHO$ so it also has $CH _{3} CO$ group but in diethyl ketone we have $CH _{3} CH _{2} COCH _{2} CH _{3}$ means we have ethyl group so that is why it cannot gives iodoform test.
