When oxidises with alkaline $KMnO_{4}$ or acidic $Na_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7},$ the entire side chain ( in benzene homologues ) with atleast one $\text{H}$ at $\alpha $ - carbon , regardless of length is oxidised to $-COOH.$
