The cell cycle involves two stages. Interphase is the phase between two successive M phases. It is the most metabolically active phase and lasts more than 95% of the cell cycle duration. It consists of G1, S, and G2 phases. It is followed by the M phase or division phase, which is a very short phase in which the actual division occurs. It comprises prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
